Poaching has soared in recent decades in response to the vast appetite for ivory and rhino horn among consumers. The world’s largest consumer of ivory is China, where a growing, newly-affluent middle class can afford to indulge its taste for exotic luxury goods and status symbols such as carved ivory objects.
The demand for rhino horn has soared in several Asian countries, mainly China and Vietnam, where it is used in traditional medicine, although it has no medicinal or curative properties whatsoever. The current surge in rhino poaching is primarily driven by demand in Vietnam, where it is also considered a high-value status symbol and, increasingly, is used as a party drug.
The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t just been tough for humans - it's been putting Rhinos in real jeopardy. With only 5,500 black rhinos left... it's proving incredibly difficult.
Since the pandemic has started, this has already activated poachers -due to demand for rhino horns in China and parts of Asia after the pandemic-induced slump is over.

Lockdown appears to have given rhino poachers free time to regroup and plan strikes. Why? Because the playing field is in their favour and they won’t have as many problems moving around
